Another update on hubby...

I wish I had wonderful news to share with everyone about my hubby's leg, but after a CT scan and a visit to the Orthopedist yesterday, he came home with devastating news. We're still trying to wrap our minds around our two options. Firstly the doctor told him that this leg was never going to heal. There was just too much trauma to the bone and too much missing cartilage for the leg to ever be normal. His first option is to go in and fuse the foot and ankle, and he gave that an 85% chance of doing the job, but the continued risk of infection is high and that the bones won't hold the fusion because they are already so damaged is a real possibility. His other option is to amputate from the mid calf down. We know that's the option we have to pick, but it's so difficult to wrap our heads around that at this point. Our choice is when to do the surgery. Bill want's to wait until after the children leave next April or May, but that means he will struggle along with pain, swelling, constantly have to lay down and give his foot a break. After the amputation he will be fitted with a prosthetic leg and I believe life would get back to much more normal for us. He's been down now for almost a year, has five surgeries behind him, contract MRSA and spent nearly a week in ICU. I'm very weary of dealing with all the set backs and he is too. I would so appreciate your prayer support during this difficult time of making the right decision and picking the right time...

Hugs,
Barb

  6. Oh my goodness Barb my heart feels your disappointment and I was told long time ago to turn the d (in disappointment and turn it to and H which makes it Hisappointment. The Lord never gives us more than we can handle. We don't know why or reason but put your faith and trust in the Lord. Whatever option you choose I pray for Godly wisdom for you and all the medical personnel that will work with your hubby. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. God Bless You all.

  13. prayers are in overdrive for you both. I am concerned about waiting and an infection incurring that can really cause problems.

  14. Hugs to you Barb. I wish I could be there with you just to hug you and hold your hand and yes, even cry with you. God has it all under control. We just need to trust Him and believe He knows what He is doing. I agree with the other posters that waiting may be not such a good idea. I understand how quickly some of these infections can devistate the body. My daughter is proof of that. Please keep us posted on your decision.

  20. That is devastating for the both of you. I hope he does not run into too many infection between now and April. Have you looked into any on line chat rooms or supportive services for amputee's? Sometimes just reading what they went through before, during, and after can shed a lot of light on things and give you a different perspective. Will send prayers for both of you.

  23. Oh wow, Barb. Unfortunately I don't know the whole story behind this as I just hopped here looking for the Magnolia-licious blog hop....but I just couldn't pass this by without wishing you all the best! And hubby! Naturally losing a limb/partial limb will be devestating.....at the end of the day, resuming a "normal " life will be done more easily that way, rather than the constant pain, resting, infections and such (as you said above)......And risking catching MRSA again....OIY!! I'm a nurse and know the detrimental effects of this.......Seen it! Stay strong and stay positive! Life is too short! (I'm gonna rummage around your blog here and get the deets on hubby's leg in full)
